There has been a massive surge in gig assignments in recent years. For example, over 50% of gig workers in the USA actively choose gig assignments rather than as a stopgap. IBEF estimates that there will be 35 million gig workers in India in the next few years. Globally, this trend is gaining traction.
Gig engagements were initially focused on front-line roles, but there is a fascinating trend emerging – they are now being adopted for mid-level and senior/CXO positions as well. A number of savvy organizations have learned some valuable lessons from the pandemic, including the ability to hire experts in other cities and countries to work for them.
Jon Younger and Norm Smallwood have co-authored a book on Agile Talent and noted the following trends:
1. Demand for expertise on tap as competition increases
2. Non-local or external talent is highly trained and are deeply aware of markets movements over a longer time horizon to understand the strategies required
3. Technical expertise is more accessible globally with countries producing more highly educated talent
4. Organisations are relooking at careers – moving to flexible arrangements rather than traditional careers
This is what Jon and Norm call Cloud Resourcing – where you are able to access a global talent pool with greater skills than possibly available locally. At FinGig.Pro we call it “Expert on Demand” and it is a key trend in Resourcing for a changing world”.
In addition to establishing capability, reducing costs, and overcoming strategic inertia, such talent supplements internal resources rather than replacing them, providing a clear benefit across cost, expertise, speed, and knowledge transfer.
However, organisations need to have a proper system to integrate them into the culture and derive the maximum benefit.
What makes organisations consider this changing face of talent?
